It is the only mainland palm and is much slower growing than the offshore island forms.

It is found in lowland forest throughout the North Island to Banks Peninsula in the east and Greymouth in the west.

Flowering doesn't occur until it is at least 30 years old, followed by red fruits which take a year to ripen.
