Pohutakawa is a coastal native tree with stunning red flowers in December.

It occurs naturally in the upper half of the North Island.

It is an open, wide spreading tree with aerial roots.

The juvenile foliage is plain green with no tomentum.
The adult foliage has grey-green leaves with tomentum.

It is an excellent tree for coastal planting and poor soils.

Juvenile pohutakawas can get damaged foliage from a pest called psyllid.
The psyllid causes unslightly lumps on the leaves.
As the psyllid doesn't feed on adult foliage, it will eventually disappear.
It can be sprayed with an insecticide.

The seed is wind dispersed.
