Makomako occurs naturally throughout New Zealand in damp disturbed forest margins.
Makomako is used as a colonising plant as it is an easy to establish, quick growing small tree.
It has panicles of rose flowers in Spring and serrated green leaves that are purplish underneath.
Male and female flowers arise on separate plants, so both sexes are required for the production of red-black berries.
In the colder climate this tree is semi-deciduous.
