The pleasing symmetrical appearance and the hardiness of this species makes it a favourite of the New Zealand tree ferns.

It is the slowest growing of the tree ferns, common in forests from Tauranga southward.

The fibrous trunk of Dicksonia fibrosa grows up to 60cm in diameter.
It is much slower growing, the fibrous truck is much thicker and the fronds are much lighter than Dicksonia squarrosa.

The mature fronds are 2 metres long.
As the old fronds wither they simply hang down from the trunk like a skirt.
It is important not to remove the dead fronds as it protects the tree fern from drying out. This brown skirt-like feature makes it the species easy to identify.
