Cyathea medullaris

Black tree fern, Mamaku
Cyathea medullaris is the largest of the New Zealand tree ferns.
It is the tallest and the fastest growing with much larger fronds and is often established on slips and stream sides.
It is recognised by the black thin trunk which develops hexagonal patterns from where the old fronds have dropped.
