A reed with a fine grey-green leaves with brownish bracts at the joints, forming a large densely erect clump.
It is found throughout New Zealand in coastal marshlands and estuaries.
It spreads from a creeping rhizome but is slow spreading, and is dioecious- having male and female flowers on separate plants

Although considered a wetland species, oioi will grow in normal conditions.
